AFTER THE KILL
South Luangwa, Zambia
A freshly killed elephant calf lay butchered beneath the scrub nearby. We followed this lion down the bank, where he cleaned the blood from his face and drank from the lake, while keeping a lookout for crocodiles or hippos. Once the thirst was quenched, he let out an almighty roar to signal the lioness and cubs across the lake that breakfast was served. The response in kind was swift and loud.
