GUARDIAN OF THE OLD KING
Lower Zambezi, Zambia
Lions were a rare sight during our time in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi district. Yet, one in particular stood out—a venerable, battle-scarred old lion we encountered often. His days of strength had faded; he moved little, his defenses lost to time, with teeth worn to the gums and claws nearly vanished. Remarkably, he was not alone. He had three devoted sons who watched over him, bringing food and protection. This image captures one of them. In the wild, younger males usually overthrow aging lions—sometimes even their own fathers—to claim dominance. But because the old lion no longer posed a threat, an extraordinary bond flourished between him and his sons: a testament to loyalty and compassion within the pride. Photo © copyright by Brad Baker.
