SLEEPY HEAD

Lower Zambezi, Zambia

We spent a month exploring southern Africa, and one of our first stops on safari was the legendary Victoria Falls, viewed from the Zimbabwean side. That evening, we drifted along the river on a sunset cruise, hoping to catch glimpses of the region’s remarkable wildlife. Nothing can prepare you for the thrill—and jolt of fear—of spotting a hippo in its natural element for the first time. They are awe-inspiring and genuinely terrifying. Ask any guide which animal they respect most, and it’s a toss-up between the hippo and the cape buffalo. Hippos are fiercely territorial, astonishingly swift in the water, and masters of stealth. While this particular hippo lingered at a safe distance, we would have several hair-raising close encounters with them later in our journey—experiences that instill a deep, cautious respect for the untamed wilderness that is Africa.
